After leaving WROV I did mornings in Orlando... then I went to Baltimore, Sacramento, Miami, Phoenix, Houston, and Dallas. And along the way, I was flattered to be nominated by the CMA and Billboard for large market personality of the year.
All along the way there were successes and failures, but whether thin or flush, I knew what smoothed out the bumps and keeps me going is the fact that I was lucky enough to work with a true bunch of professionals at WROV.
I truly believe that what made that whole experience so special for all of us is that we had a mentality of 'never letting the other guys down.' The worst thing that I could think of during those days -- and I have carried it with me -- is having one of the other jocks say 'boy that was lame.' I guess we all tried to impress not only the listeners, but each other, too. So, in fact, the 'knife' that was our collective personalities just kept getting sharper and sharper. And that little 1 kilowatt station sounded like the WLS of Roanoke to me. At present, I'm still on the air, doing mornings in Norfolk, VA, and still loving every minute of it!
